28th Annual Academy for Sports Dentistry Symposium in Washington, D.C. June 24-26, 2010

Report on the 28th Annual Academy for Sports Dentistry (ASD) Symposium in Washington, D.C. June 24-26, 2010. I recently returned from a great ASD meeting in our nation’s capital. In attendance were many of the dentists who work with athletes from across the entire spectrum of sport. There were many presentations reporting on the latest research on sports dentistry.

Some of the meeting highlights which I will write about in more detail in future blogs and the Vail Daily include:

1. The difference in how we now look at concussions in children.
2. How expensive dental trauma is for the patient over their life. This simply reinforces the need to prevent these accidents as much as possible!
3. Theory on the fabrication of a properly fitted mouthguard and how over 98% of the mouthguards used today are not fitted correctly and not giving the protection necessary!
4. Dental trauma in the “aesthetic zone.” It is so important that when these injuries do occur you need to find a dentist with the proper training and expertise in the field of aesthetic dentistry.
5. Update on the best materials used to splint teeth after a dental injury. Amazingly, there are several studies that show we have been splinting with the wrong material and often times for incorrect periods of time which might actually cause additional damage to the tooth.
6. Recent research which originally came from Japan is revolutionizing how we look at root canal treatment in these damaged teeth.

While this is by no means a complete list of the great topics, it does demonstrate the importance of dental and medical professionals staying current on the latest research.

Dr. Harding who practices dentistry in the Vail area recently returned from the 28th annual Academy for Sports Dentistry Symposium in Washington, D.C. He also works as an official medical provider to the US Ski and Snowboard teams and serves as the team dentist for Ski and Snowboard Club Vail. He is currently conducting groundbreaking research on performance enhancing sports mouthguards with both of these organizations. Dr. Harding is the owner of the Harding Dental Center.
